More than 280 firms with projects across seven countries (China & Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) participated in the BCI Interior Design Awards (IDA) 2024, a regionally renowned competition that recognises beauty and originality in completed interior design projects in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong.
The 2024 cycle, that was held from September 2023 to February 2024, called for projects under the theme of Tone X Texture to select those that have demonstrated a masterful command over colour and texture in crafting ingenious interiors, as well as contributing to sustainability and having a positive impact on users.
To assess the received entries, this cycle’s jury panel was selected from professionals who are experts in the design industry for more than 15 years: Budi Kurniawan, the founder and principal design of BK Studio (Indonesia); IDr Norshafina Ibrahim, the co-founder of Skala Design Consult Sdn Bhd (Malaysia); and Vicky Chan, the founder of Avoid Obvious Architects (Hong Kong).
Awarded in two categories, the IDA 2024 winning and merit projects are:
Residential:
- First Place: The Luxury House by Cat Moc Group (Vietnam)
- Second Place: The St. Regis Residence by Natalie Kwong Studio (Indonesia)
- Third Place: Kabuchin Penthouse by Idee Architects (Vietnam)
- Merit: Luxurious Sophistication by Artwill Interior Design House (Hong Kong)
Commercial:
- First Place: Angels’ Share Bar by Eigh-T Architects (Vietnam)
- Second Place: Crystal Restaurant by NH Village for Architectural Design Company Limited (Vietnam)
- Third Place: Beauty Of Light by Arti Studio Limited (Hong Kong)
- Merit: Shenzhen Yanlord Dream Center by Woods Bagot (Hong Kong)
- Merit: The Greenhouse at Dulwich College by DP Architects Pte Ltd (Singapore)
These projects and their project teams were announced on 31 May 2024 at the first awarding gala event of BCI Asia Awards in Vietnam, with those from Vietnam receiving their accolades on stage.
Following this, the other project teams will be awarded at the respective local BCI Asia Awards 2024 to be held across the seven BCI Central countries through to September 2024. They will receive cash prizes, trophies, certificates and recognition on Construction Plus’ print and online platforms.
The jurors admired this cycle’s theme and entries: “Overall, the quality of the entries is substantial with different approaches, able to inspire us more with elevated design. They display creativity in shaping and carving the space in a functional manner,” said Budi Kurniawan.
“My overall impression of the entries for this year’s BCI Interior Design Awards is quite positive. I am particularly impressed by the submissions in the commercial category, which showcase a diverse array of projects characterised by unique narrative styles and design approaches. It’s fascinating to observe the distinct methods employed in each project, especially how they achieve functionality while enhancing user experience,” stated IDr Norshafina Ibrahim. “Moreover, I appreciate the forward-thinking approach demonstrated by the emphasis on sustainability, ensuring that these projects are not only relevant for today, but are also prepared for future demands,” she added.
“I actually really enjoyed the exchange with jurors from two other locations. It was a great cultural exchange on our different design perspective. Congratulations for selecting some of the most creative works to proceed to the next stage,” said Vicky Chan. “The use of materials is playful to elevate the design ideas. The award-winning entries were able to turn common materials, like clay bricks, into a unique residence,” he added.
