The design brief was to create a multi-functional space with a mix of F&B, meeting, working and event areas together with leisure facilities. The task was not only to bring all these elements together in a single building, but also to give a specific identity to each area, while maintaining an overarching theme that represents both Singapore and Asia’s character.
RESTORING THE ORIGINAL AMBIENCE
Straits Clan sits in a conservation building in an area surrounded by other heritage shophouses, so the designers had to be careful with the façade to comply with the conservation guidelines. The window elements were reinstated. The colour of the building and the façade closely resembles the original, in accordance with the guidelines from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).
Previously, the building had been repurposed as a boutique hotel. The spaces were converted into small rooms with low ceilings. The designers accommodated the new services by reverting the building to its original shell. They maximised the ceiling height and brought back the spaces to their original proportions.
