The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) will present Singapore engineers’ contributions in sustainable development to the world on 4 March 2022 at the World Engineering Day (WED) for Sustainable Development 2022 24HRS LIVE Stream – the first-ever round-the-clock broadcast organised by the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO). The World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development is an official international day proclaimed in 2019 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
Singapore will showcase three videos between 2.45 pm and 6.00 pm (SGT), in support of the aim to recognise engineers around the world for their remarkable contributions for a better and sustainable world.
To be screened at about 2.45 pm (SGT), the first video produced by the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment for the Singapore Green Plan 2030, offers insights into Singapore’s advancement of the national agenda on sustainable development, with the aim of strengthening Singapore’s commitments under the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and Paris Agreement to position our nation to achieve our long-term net zero emissions aspiration as soon as viable.
Exclusively produced by IES for this event, the second video, to be played at about 4.30 pm (SGT), captures highlights in Singapore’s sustainability journey since the 1970s, underpinned by the accomplishments of engineers from different disciplines. It is narrated by former Nominated Member of Parliament Eunice Olsen.
From the commencement of the Marina Bay Area’s transformation in the 70s, the move of our international airport to Changi in the 80s, the building of Jurong Island into an international chemical hub in the 90s to the creation of the four national taps by PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, the development of Singapore’s first large offshore landfill – the Semakau landfill and the development of smart housing such as the Punggol Northshore housing project, Singapore has been able to develop itself into a sustainability-centric modern city with the ingenuity, tenacity and passion of engineers.
The second video also illustrates how IES, as the national society of engineers in Singapore, has been leading the engineering community to forge a sustainable future for Singapore through initiatives such as the World Engineers Summit and the Charles Rudd Distinguished Public Lectures.
The third video, also to be played at about 4.30 pm, focuses on collaborations between IES and Science Centre Singapore to nurture the young into Singapore’s next generation of engineers to drive sustainable development into the future.
Besides the videos, Er Tan Seng Chuan, Emeritus President, IES will be interviewed live between 5.00 pm and 5.15 pm (SGT) to highlight the importance of engineering contributions in sustainable development and emerging trends in shaping the future of engineering.
The 24HRS LIVE follows WED 2022 celebrations around the globe, starting from Australia and ending in Costa Rica and hitting eight major regions over 24 hours. It can be viewed at: https://worldengineeringday.net/24-hrs-live/
The 4th of March is also the founding day of WFEO, a Federation representing engineering societies of the world, consisting of hundred national members and international members, including IES.
