Singapore General Hospital (SGH), established in 1821, is the largest acute tertiary hospital in Singapore providing comprehensive patient-centred care with over 50 clinical specialties on its campus. This new emergency medicine building is part of the SGH Campus Master Plan that aims to support the latest models of holistic, multidisciplinary and team-based care. The 12-storey building with four underground levels will house the accident and emergency services as well as acute medical care for around 15 years. After that, the facility will be retained, expanded or converted to new uses as needed to meet evolving healthcare demands.
VERTICALLY INTEGRATED CONNECTIVITY
This new building is designed with both above-ground pedestrian and below-ground vehicular connectivity to better integrate it with the rest of the Outram Campus. It will be connected to other campus buildings via bridges and walkways, providing close access to diagnostic and interventional facilities to support operations.
The spatial layout is strategically organised to ensure rapid patient care and streamlined workflows, even on a constrained site. This patient-centric design approach ensures an efficient care delivery journey, from a patient’s arrival to discharge. A wide range of innovative facilities will be available to provide emergency services efficiently within the compact vertical structure. For instance, the ambulance drop-off on the third level directly connects to resuscitation rooms and trauma bays. There is also a dedicated entrance leading to isolation rooms. The design ensures emergency patients can be quickly and efficiently transferred to the appropriate treatment zones, thanks to the dedicated lift cores.
FLEXIBLE AND FORWARD-LOOKING STRATEGIES
Designing a hospital to be flexible and adaptable over a 15-year period is crucial to accommodate evolving healthcare needs, technologies and patient demographics. As such, this project has incorporated several key strategies.
