To commemorate World Engineering Day (WED) for Sustainable Development, the inaugural IES Green Festival 2023 was held on 4 March 2023 to align with the theme of WED 2023: Engineering Innovation for a More Resilient World.
Jointly organised by The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) and Science Centre Singapore, the festival enabled students and the public to learn, explore and reimagine engineering possibilities for a more sustainable future. Highlights include: a chat with Dr. Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State of the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment; technical discussions; exhibition and showcases; fun challenges; etc.
According to Dalson Chung, President of IES, the festival was one of the key events this year for the IES Green Plan 2030, a plan launched for the engineering community to support Singapore’s whole-of-nation sustainable development movement.

The festival was also livestreamed on WED Global Stream, which saw teams from Temasek Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic selected among the finalists of the WED Hackathon.
An official day proclaimed in 2019 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), WED takes place on every 4 March to celebrate engineering and contribution of the world’s engineers. It is Singapore’s anchor activity, as one of two satellite locations and the only one in Asia, for the global WED celebrations. —Construction+ Online
