Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced the new alignment and station location for the Cross Island Line (CRL), Punggol Extension on 10 March 2020.
The new 7.3-kilometre extension will have a direct connection for commuters travelling between eastern and north-eastern Singapore. Residents living in eastern areas such as Pasir Ris and Tampines North as well as north-eastern areas will have better rail connectivity and greater accessibility.
The Punggol Extension will be fully underground and comprises four stations: Punggol; Riviera: Elias; and Pasir Ris. Construction is expected to start in 2022 and projected to be completed by 2031.
The CRL is Singapore’s eight MRT Line and is the country’s longest fully underground , linking several major areas such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region. Upon completion, the CRL is expected to have a daily commuter population of at least 600,000 in the initial years, growing to 1 million in the longer term.
