ASEAN Energy Awards 2018 for the IES Green Building

The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) has clinched first runner-up position in the Green Building Awards – Small and Medium Green Buildings category of the ASEAN Energy Awards 2018. Dato Lim Jock Hoi, ASEAN Secretary-General, presented the award to Prof. Yeoh Lean Weng, President of IES at the 36th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) Official Dinner held in Singapore on 29 October 2018.

IES Green Building is recognised for its achievements in energy efficiency, usage of renewable energy, water efficiency, environmental sustainability, indoor environment quality, operation and maintenance features and other green and innovative features.

The ASEAN Energy Award is the region’s highest recognition of efforts in energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy management. It aims to promote the incorporation of sustainable and innovative features for building projects in ASEAN.

Completed in 2016, the IES Green Building is a three-storey institutional building housing office, meeting and training facilities and a basement car park. Designed and built by engineers for engineers, the well-insulated building reduces both external heat gain and highly efficient Variable Refrigerant Volume system.

Other sustainability features include:

  • Design of carpark and office spaces that allows for maximum daylight penetration, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting. Installation of motion sensors in carparks, stairwells and toilets to reduce electricity use. Use of energy-efficient fixtures such as T5 fluorescent lamps and LEDs where necessary.
  • Installation of solar panel arrays spanning a total of 195 square metres on the entire roof space to maximise the capture of renewable energy and reduce the operational carbon footprint. This generates approximately 25 per cent of the building’s annual power needs.
  • Installation of an intelligent Advanced Energy Management System to enable users to monitor electricity, water and gas consumption from any web-enabled device. This facilitates efficient decision-making on maximising energy saving opportunities and encourages employees to take ownership of the process.

“IES would like to dedicate this award to all the engineers who had contributed their expertise and services towards the construction of the IES Green Building @ Bukit Tinggi. We hope that our effort in adopting innovative green practices will contribute to local and regional efforts in creating a sustainable and reliable energy future,” said Prof Yeoh.

“The IES Green Building has demonstrated the feasibility of harnessing sustainable construction processes and innovative green solutions to enhance environmental performance. We hope that this will inspire the built environment sector to increase their commitment to reduce carbon foot print, increase energy efficiency and adopt renewable clean energy for all building projects,” said Er Chong Kee Sen, Chairman of the IES Re-Development Taskforce Committee and Past President of IES.

The IES Green Building is one of ten local winners for this year’s awards across three categories: Green Building Awards, Energy Efficiency Building Awards and Special Submissions. The building has also won the Green Mark Platinum Award (2017) from the Building and Construction Authority and received PUB’s ABC Waters Certification in 2016. — Construction+ Online
