In conjunction with the 65-year milestone of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), a celebratory event themed ESG as Catalyst for Engineering Evolution was held on 1 June 2024. Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister as the guest of honour, and over 1,300 representatives of professional bodies, government agencies and regional engineering organisations were present at the venue at One World Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
During his speech, Fadillah, who is also an Honorary Fellow of IEM, called for collective and careful intervention in resolving pollution and socio-economic disparities, as environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations garner increasing attention of businesses and investors in the nation.
In the same vein, Ir. Prof. Dr. Jeffrey Chiang Choong Luin, President of IEM, spoke about the pivotal role of ESG principles towards a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future. To this end, the organisation has recently published the IEM Guideline on Simplified ESG Disclosure for Built Environment—an initiative with the aim of facilitating sustainability reporting in line with local and international standards.
Among the programme highlights was the presentation of the IEM Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award, the highest industry honour of the evening, to Minconsult Sdn Bhd for the construction of the PETRONAS Leadership Centre in Selangor.
