Sime Darby Property has partnered with Tropical Rainforest Conservation & Research Centre (TRCRC) to set up and operate the Elmina Rainforest Knowledge Centre (ERKC) and the Endangered, Rare and Threatened (ERT) Native Tree Nursery within the 300-ace Central Park in the City of Elmina, Shah Alam.
Sime Darby Property Acting CEO Dato’ Wan Hashimi Albakri Wan Ahmad Amin Jaffri aims to safeguard the native endangered tree species by replanting the urban rainforest, improving biodiversity and creating “an environment that provides opportunities to learn about the important of nature”.
“In essence, the reforestation project is carried out to connect our communities with nature. TRCRC’s expertise will help us complete our mission and enhance community awareness on the benefits of co-existing with nature,” Dato Wan Hashimi said
The ERKC is said to be positioned as the “Gateway to Malaysia’s Natural Heritage”, focusing on environmental education and conversation, R&D, promotions of eco-tourism and other green activities, while the ERT will be a nursery home for threatened species. The goal is to produce up to 100,000 of such species.
Construction of the ERKC is expected to be completed by mid-September 2019, while ERT will be constructed by the middle of 2020.
These new initiatives are built on the Group’s biodiversity programme and the nursery will aid in ramping up efforts to deliver more sustainable townships in the future. ― Construction+ Online
