Kuala Lumpur, 17 March 2021 – The Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) has launched new programmes to prepare engineers and fresh graduates to join timber-based companies. In these programmes, they can undergo training and internship programmes that may lead to them building successful careers in the industry.
The MTC Engineer Placement and Internship in Industry Programme 2021 is a collaboration between the council, higher learning institutions in the country and timber associations.
According to CEO of MCT, Muhtar Suhaili, subtleties of most manufacturing processes are best understood by engineers. He said, “The need for engineers is becoming more crucial as timber-based manufacturers remodel their operations towards digitalisation and smart manufacturing, primarily due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on businesses.”
The programmes are part of MTC’s five-year plan, which focuses on building the talents in the industry. The engineer placement programme is a one-year programme for participants to receive on-the-job training under the guidance of a professional. Meanwhile, the internship programme will last three to six months, and is open to undergraduates with relevant background. All training cost and allowances will be borne by MCT.
The programmes have been launched jointly by the Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, YB Dato’ Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali and the Minister of Higher Learning, YB Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad. They will also oversee the MoU signing between MTC, six timber associations, eight universities and two polytechnics.
