Located in KL Sentral—the next-generation Central Business District (CBD) and largest transport hub—the Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) Sentral Suites is a well-established mixed development that complements the metropolis lifestyle.
CONCEPTS AND LAYOUTS
There are two main unit types featured in the sales gallery and show units: a typical unit with two bedrooms and a dual-key unit with a studio.
The concept for the two-bedroom type B unit was extended from the background of KL Sentral, hence the design team blended in the elements of a cosmopolitan vibe by featuring non-traditional home materials and designs to redefine the look and usage of the space. Urban concepts were applied by using rough materials to create a distinctive modern and bohemian style. However, space solutions gave the overall design a polished touch. Multipurpose storage, such as an organised and functional compartmentalised storage, ensures convenience and flexibility for users. In addition, a wall bed can be folded up to save space in a multifunctional room.
The dual-key Corner D unit has a proper full-function kitchen and a restaurant and bar for a nice dining experience, which is defined as a unit suitable for young families. Despite the clean, bright and bold colours of the interior, the design team blended periods and style with a healthy dose of whimsy to implement the concept of très—which means very trendy and fashionable, and is used to describe the attractive quality of the unusual and timeless details.
There is also a studio unit called En-suite, which introduced an eclectic style for young professionals. The mixture of redefined classic elements from different periods creates a feeling of charm that is distinctively irregular and a combination of creativity and fun. It creates a whole new definition on its own, resulting in a fusion of aesthetic value.
DESIGN OBJECTIVE
The overall design objective for the sales gallery and show units was to narrow down the generation gap by introducing different childhood games that could strengthen the connection between different generations in the urban habitat. It reminds residents of how people live in a traditional community, which also demonstrates the process of transforming KL Sentral into an urban transportation hub.
MATERIALS
The interior finishes came from both local and overseas resources. The main focus was on selecting good-quality materials regardless of manufacturing locations. The application of materials was based on required functions and how they suited the design.
PROJECT CONSTRAINTS
One of the biggest constraints in this project was taking fundamental aspects into account, such as how to coordinate the time, budget and lead time in procurement of resources, which were all crucial in ensuring on-time delivery of the project.
One of the concept walls featured localised childhood games, such as Congkak, Five Stones, Gasing, Guli and Takraw, which was dedicated to Generation X and Generation Y in order to bring back the good old memories. The materials used to build the feature wall were limited in the market nowadays, while overseas custom-made supply would compromise the working timeline. Hence, the team needed to source for materials such as Guli (glass marbles) locally. As the sizes of the marbles available in the old streets were too small for the visual requirement of the feature wall, customised marbles were sourced from a local supplier.
