The City Council of Penang Island (Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang, MBPP) Relau Sports Complex (RSC) is a recreational and athletic venue for people to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle, as well as an ideal venue for athletes to carry out their training.
Located strategically in Relau and easily accessible to local residents, the two-storey complex was built over an 8,785-square-metre site with an approximately 4,275.50-square-metre built-up area. The MBPP RSC is equipped with an Olympic-size swimming pool, a diving pool, 10 indoor badminton courts and other extensive facilities including gymnasium, dry-gym room, shower and changing rooms, pro-shop, cafeteria and etc.
The main structure of the building was created by using recyclable steel frame structure with insulated metal cladding, hence the exposed structural steel in this building is architecturally prominent.
The main roof was constructed of lightweight recyclable profiled steel metal sheet coated in a light cream colour to minimise heat absorption. The roof insulation comprise 100-millimetre-thick 40 kilogramme per cubic metre (kg/m3) rockwool and one layer of heat reflective foil.
The building envelope was designed to minimise solar heat gain inside the building. The complex has a clear north-south orientation for all openings and windows, and the design reduced the glazing to solid spandrel ratio that reduces heat gain through the glazing. The overall building façade’s Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) is 32.97 watts per square metre (W/m2).
Rainwater harvesting tanks are located on the canopy roof level and buried in the car park area at the ground level. Rainwater is collected on the roof drains and channelled into the rainwater harvesting tanks, which is then filtered and reused to irrigate landscape and for toilet flushing. All the tap fittings and sanitary wares have water saving and reduction valves.
MBPP RSC was designed with a distinctive and attractive exterior, as well as quality specifications. It is also in compliance with the Green Building Index (GBI). Green materials such as low-volatile organic compound (VOC) paints and adhesives, recyclable and environmentally friendly materials were applied on all internal and external spaces.
The project also features Green approaches and elements, such as chargEV parking, solar tube, bicycle lane, universal accessible facilities, extensive daylighting strategies, material selection, energy efficiency approach, natural ventilation, indoor air quality and others.
Most of the building materials and products were extracted from and manufactured within the region to support the use of indigenous resources, as well as reduce the environmental impact resulting from transportation.
