The opening of the Penang Second Bridge in 2014 has spurred the development of Penang’s satellite township, including the former palm oil plantation town, Batu Kawan. The new University of Wollongong (UOW) Malaysia KDU campus building is located here, developed to support the capacity of the existing campus as the number of students continues to increase.
The design aims to redefine space for higher learning that normally serves mere lecture and classroom activities. The interconnected indoor and green outdoor spaces, as well as the connection between the whole complex and surrounding facilities, seek to create not only an impactful learning environment, but also a lively community for both students and faculty members.
