The project is located in a tourist and cultural destination: Hoi An. In the architects’ memories, Hoi An was a place to escape the city or learn about Vietnamese people and culture. On weekends, they would drive there to enjoy an afternoon beer by the Hoai River, wait for the street lights to light up and relish the nostalgic feeling of Hoi An at night. When they found out that they would be involved in the project, these memories became the main inspiration for the architectural design.
DESIGN & MATERIALS
The main principle is to create architectural works that harmonise with the landscape while preserving the existing culture and ecology. This is particularly important because the authorities require new developments on a heritage site to follow specific guidelines. For example, to blend with the old town context, buildings need to be low-rise and use a double roof structure with a typical Hoi An’s style.
Aside from common materials such as concrete and wood, the ma materials throughout the project are metal and ceramic, applied to architectural details such as balustrades, floors, walls, ceilings and the interior. The roof tiling was also made of local glazed ceramic. This was combined with solar cells and a green roof for sustainability purposes. Decorative details such as lanterns and flowers with regional characteristics were incorporated into the architecture and interior. The primary materials were sourced from nearby craftsmen—the pottery from Thanh Ha, the pottery village; and the wood and rattan from Kim Bong, the carpentry village.
