To begin with, the project will increase the treatment capacity of Yuen Long Sewage Treatment Works from 70,000 cubic metres to 150,000 cubic metres per day by phase. To this end, the first-time adoption of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology over conventional activated sludge systems will improve biological nutrient removal as well as reduce energy usage. A shared renewable energy system comprising Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and photovoltaic panels will be employed to supply part of the energy demand within the plant.
Recreational amenities are introduced to facilitate firsthand learning about the functional and ecological components of the premises, following its proximity to vast wetlands. A promenade running along the eastern side of the development allows visitors to view the machineries at work through openings on the façades. Meanwhile, the roof garden features a bird hide of circular form to provide a panorama of the surroundings. Most of the sewage treatment water tanks are located underground so as not to impede the views. —Construction+ Online
