The service scope of BEAM Plus certification has been extended to regions outside Hong Kong with the introduction of BEAM Plus Existing Buildings (Global Version) Version 1.0 in May 2024. A joint effort by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and the BEAM Society Limited (BSL), the addition seeks to:
- flexibly assess the sustainability performance of premises based on applicable standards of diverse geographical locales;
- work in line with relevant international rating systems for a more comprehensive assessment; and
- contribute to global sustainable development.
To this end, the HKGBC, the BSL and 13 key stakeholders from Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA) are set to collectively explore potential applications of BEAM Plus tools across 30 overseas projects, following the signing of Memoranda of Understanding between these parties during the launching event.
The participating organisations encompass developers, property management companies, institutions and state-owned enterprises, covering properties in the Mainland, Southeast Asia, London and Sydney, among other locations.
Present at the milestone occasion were Bernadette Linn Hon-ho, JP, the Secretary for Development as the guest of honour; Dr. Cheung Tin-cheung, SBS, Chairperson of the HKGBC; Sr. Frankie So Hung-fai, 1st Vice Chairperson of the BSL; and upwards of 60 industry experts.
Overall, some 1,800 projects have been certified with the BEAM Plus ratings since its rollout in 2010. —Construction+ Online
