The deadline for application for the Subsidy Scheme for Encouraging Early Deployment of 5G under the second round of the Anti-epidemic Fund will be extended for six months to May 31, 2021, to encourage more public and private organisations in different sectors to submit applications for projects which are able to deploy 5G technology to foster innovation.
The technology of 5G is characterised by high speed, low latency and the ability to support a massive number of Internet of Things devices, bringing innovative applications to different industries. The subsidy scheme commenced in early May this year to encourage various sectors to deploy 5G technology early to improve the efficiency of their operations and the quality of their services, thereby enhancing Hong Kong’s overall competitiveness, particularly in view of the epidemic situation.
Under the Scheme, the Government will subsidise 50 per cent of the actual costs directly relevant to the deployment of 5G technology in an approved project, subject to a cap of HKD500,000. As of 6 November 2020, 20 applications have been approved. The approved cases cover various aspects of innovative applications in different sectors, including remote mechanical maintenance, 3D building information modelling (BIM) in construction sites, e-sports car racing and 4K/8K live video broadcast.
Details of the Scheme and the application form are available on the website of the Office of the Communications Authority. — Construction+ Online
