Golden Harvest is a boutique cinema tucked in a quiet corner of Fanling. Unlike most movie theatres in Hong Kong that are situated within shopping centres, Golden Harvest occupies a standalone building.
Originally an old shop with an area of 390 square metres, the building was converted into two screening halls with a total seating capacity of 218. The client decided to renovate the building in hopes to attract more patrons and bring the community closer together.
BOLD DESIGN FOR A SMALL SPACE
Raw industrial style with bold design elements was chosen to give the cinema an exciting and lively mood. Prominent features such as a bright neon signage, bold typography and graphics in bright yellow lights make the façade unmissable in the main street and a striking change from the district’s string of old lackluster structures.
This vibrant vibe continues to the interior, which is infused with exaggerated décor, oversized signage, and striking black and yellow colour scheme. The materials used were mostly metal with a combination of concrete, tiles, net wires and patterned glass used to create a raw, industrial effect that gives the illusion of depth and space. Exposed ceiling and ductwork were also painted black to provide the illusion of added height and a more dramatic lighting effect. LED lights were installed throughout the cinema to keep energy consumption low.
