MTR Corporation constitutes 49.6 per cent of public transport commuting trips in Hong Kong and accounts for 8.8 per cent of total energy consumption by the sector, as the data from Hong Kong Energy End-use Data 2023 have shown. To enhance low-carbon public transport services, the company has implemented a series of initiatives covering rail and property developments over the past years—in line with collective efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Hin Keng Station, which was opened in 2020, features a semi-enclosed space; natural lighting; cross ventilation; extensive green roof; and the use of renewable energy. Bird boxes, Ultrasonic Water Leakage Flowmeters (used to prevent water wastage) and eco-brick planters were subsequently introduced. It is the first railway station in the world to receive an Excellent rating under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) In-use standard in 2023.
Six forthcoming stations—namely Tung Chung East Station; Tung Chung West Station; Kwu Tung Station on the East Rail Line; Oyster Bay Station; Tuen Mun South Station; and A16 Station—have attained BEAM Plus Provisional Gold certification or above.

Additionally, solar facilities have been incorporated in stations, depots and malls. One example is the installation of over 2,100 flexible solar panels at Pat Heung Depot, making it the largest system of its kind in a single building in the city. Similar installations at Luk Yeung Galleria and Paradise Mall are set for completion within 2023.
