In response to World Environment Day, Friends of the Earth (HK) [FoE (HK)] organised the Environment Day Forum: Hong Kong – Road to Zero Carbon in the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) Building on 6 June 2016, to promote zero carbon and zero waste policies.
FoE (HK) urged the government to respond to the Paris Climate Agreement by putting out a clear direction on the development of energy efficiency and renewable energy, pledging an 80-percent carbon reduction by 2050, and aiming for minimum 10% renewable energy.
Suzanne Cheung, CEO of FoE (HK) said, “Climate change poses a serious threat to the world by increasing the frequency of extreme weather occurrences. As a member of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, Hong Kong should set clear carbon reduction goals and strategies as soon as possible in response to climate change.”
A number of professional speakers and panellists were invited to discuss on the topics of circular economy, zero carbon and zero waste. Approximately 100 participants, including government officials, industry leaders, academics, consultants and representatives from Green groups attended the forum to exchange views on the prospect of zero carbon and renewable energy development to combat climate change.
