Key figures pertaining to broad trade and end-use groups have been highlighted in the provisional results of the Quarterly Survey of Construction Output, published by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) on 11 September 2023.
Overall, the gross value of construction works (GVCW) performed by main contractors in the second quarter of 2023 rose 7.5 per cent in nominal terms and 8.6 per cent in real terms over a year earlier to HKD66.1 billion.

Of the total value, the private sector sites constituted HKD20.9 billion, recording an increase of 27.6 per cent in nominal terms and 26.4 per cent in real terms over the same period. The GVCW at public sector sites declined by 8.9 per cent year-on-year in nominal terms and 8.6 per cent year-on-year in real terms—contributing HKD22.1 billion. Locations other than construction sites generated HKD23.1 billion through the quarter, up by 10.7 per cent in nominal terms and 12.8 per cent in real terms compared with a year earlier.
The major end-use groups were residential buildings, whose GVCW totalled HKD16.5 billion from a growth of 46.6 per cent in nominal terms; as well as transport projects amounted to HKD8.1 billion, marking a rise by 10.5 per cent in nominal terms.
