Beauty of Light

Third Place: Commercial | Hong Kong | BCI Interior Design Awards 2024

This is a place for beauty—that is the sentiment one surely gets upon entering the space. The soft lighting, coral-coloured palette and curved lines draw one’s attention to a somewhat ethereal enclave. This 300-square-metre cosmetic medical centre, nestled within the high-rise concrete jungle in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, brings together ingenuity in spatial design, lighting and views to redefine what a beauty facility means.

A CLEVER USE OF SPACE
The spatial layout is designed to provide guests with a rich, ‘cinematic’ experience. Each area has a unique scene, with changes in scale, light and visual elements.

Firstly, a long, dimly-lit curved tunnel beckons guests upon arrival, almost like entering a cave, albeit a highly stylized one. This passage rouses feelings of anticipation and excitement as it leads the way into the heart of the space, where the reception lounge awaits. It is characterized by a dramatic, tree-like display wall that seamlessly integrates into a false ceiling. The elevated screen projected from the curtain wall serves as the centrepiece, as well as to define the seating and corridor areas. Overhead, the circular artificial skylights cast a soft glow over the interior, creating a tranquil ambiance.

SUSTAINABILITY IN DESIGN
The use of long-lasting, textured wall paint reduces the need for frequent refinishing, minimizing carbon emissions from material transportation.

The design team has also adopted a thoughtful approach to the material palette. Instead of using multiple materials for the walls and ceilings, they applied a single material throughout the interior. This streamlined strategy has helped reduce overall resource consumption and simplify future maintenance.
