The findings of the 2022 Annual Survey of Economic Activities (ASEA)—an integrated survey gauging the contributions of key industries to Hong Kong’s gross domestic product—in respect of the building, construction and real estate sectors were released on 29 December 2023 by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD).
In the construction domain, total receipts at HKD411.1 billion in 2022 marked an increase of 3.8 per cent compared with 2021. The survey year recorded up to 26,600 construction establishments with approximately 186,900 people engaged to this end. The operating expenses and compensation of employees of the field totalled HKD376.4 billion in 2022, up by 2.6 per cent from the year before.
The businesses covering architectural, surveying and engineering services generated HKD26.7 billion in total receipts in 2022—a rise of 5.7 per cent over 2021. Over the same period, operating expenses and compensation of employees rose by 4.6 per cent to HKD22.9 billion; as the three service categories registered about 2,400 organisations of over 27,400 individuals.
Meanwhile, total receipts of the real estate activities in 2022 was HKD174.3 billion, which is 2.9 per cent lower than the year earlier. The industry comprised some 10,900 establishments, each bringing about an average of 11 participants, in 2022. Related operating expenses and compensation of employees grew by 4.5 per cent year-on-year, amounting to HKD90.7 billion in 2022.
