Shenzhen Airport Training Base

A view corridor is produced from open floors and window-style designs

The design seeks to integrate various typical business functions, such as offices, conference and training facilities, residential units and hotel, alongside a not-so-typical standard football field with a 400-metre track. The overarching goal is to enhance the well-being of users, guided by these four design principles: programme allocation, connection and sharing, three-dimensional ecology and view corridors.

The design is a low-carbon ecological building based on the local climate and “cold alley” airflow. The clever design could avoid the use of air conditioning systems in the public areas of the building and greatly reduce energy consumption. During the design process, the design team worked with Aedas Green Building Analytical Platform to conduct a complete simulation analysis, including wind direction and climate analysis, year-round solar thermal radiation yield and computer fluid dynamics simulation model. The platform supports the team in making operational decisions when designing the functional layout, ventilation and shading of the building’s indoor and outdoor spaces.

PROGRAMME ALLOCATION
The project site is adjacent to Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, surrounded by airport facilities and easy railway transportation access. The plot is irregularly shaped and has a height difference with the surrounding area due to the underpasses on the northwest side of the site.

Based on the existing plot conditions, the main building of the training base is partitioned into three clusters spread out from north to south: facility, training and accommodation. Close to the airport information buildings is the facility cluster in the north, connecting the training base and workplace; at the centre of the complex sits the training cluster, while the accommodation cluster is set on the southeast side of the plot. Routes and entrances are catered to the different destinations to facilitate independent operation and minimise cross-interference.
