Gammon wins largest solo contract on Terminal 2 Expansion Works

Gammon Engineering & Construction has been awarded the Terminal 2 Expansion Works project (Contract 3508), worth approximately HKD12.88 billion, by Airport Authority Hong Kong.

The works include expansion of the Terminal 2 building; an annex structure; interconnecting bridges; landside transport facilities including viaducts and at-grade roads; underground utility services; footbridges; as well as modification works to existing facilities at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). The provision of building services and airport systems also form a major part of the scope.

The contract is part of the Three Runway System (3RS) project at HKIA, which will develop Terminal 2 into a full service terminal that provides both arrivals and departures services. The project act as a showcase to demonstrate the company’s capabilities in off-site construction and design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA).

“We are thrilled and proud to have been awarded this prestigious project at the airport,” said Thomas Ho, Gammon’s chief executive.

“Our construction proposal focuses on off-site and modular solutions, especially for electrical and mechanical aspects, and many of the internal fit-out elements of the main building such as check-in islands, retail shopfronts and link bridges. We’ll also be applying a kit-of-parts approach with a high degree of standardisation to a number of areas. These approaches allow us to simplify and reduce complex construction activities and provide a significant reduction in on-site labour requirements to improve both safety and the logistics of operating in the airport environment.”

Gammon has a long history of completing projects at HKIA and considerable knowledge of working under the stringent operating restrictions that are necessary at the airport. This latest win also comes just two months after the company was awarded the HKD7.3 billion contract to construct tunnels and related works for an automatic people mover and baggage handling system at HKIA, also part of the 3RS project.

Mr Ho added, “We have an exceptionally strong senior management team for the Terminal 2 Expansion Works contract that collectively brings more than 60 years’ of experience of delivering projects at HKIA. Our understanding of the airport’s systems and procedures, combined with our DfMA approach, will support timely delivery of these important works. We are also pleased that by maximising off-site solutions, we will be able to reduce construction waste, which is a key component of our sustainability strategy.”

Gammon has long been a proponent of the digitilisation of construction and is expanding its 5G capabilities to support this approach. On this project, a number in-house digital innovations will be used to support delivery including an off-site fabrication monitoring solution, concrete management system, and sensors that track plant behaviour to ensure maximum productivity.

A range of Gammon departments will be involved in delivering the works, including Civils; Foundations; Façade; MEP; Design; Steel; Concrete; Virtual Design and Construction; and Integrated Digital Technology. At its peak, the project will employ about 3,000 staff and workers. — Construction+ Online
